Privacy Policy

Nocturne is a calm tile-matching puzzle made by Derivative Media (hello@derivativemedia.com). Privacy works the same way here as in everything we make: this policy is meant to be read, not skimmed past.
The short version
Nocturne has no accounts and never asks who you are.
Levels are generated on your device, and your progress, settings, and purchases stay on your device (purchases are handled by Apple). The only thing that leaves your device is anonymous, aggregate usage analytics, and you can turn that off in Settings › "Share anonymous usage" at any time.
Analytics we collect
To understand what to tune next (whether a level is too hard, whether the shuffle actually helps, where people stop playing), Nocturne records a small set of anonymous product events, for example:
- a level was started, won, or lost, and on a loss, how close it was;
- a level was retried;
- a consumable (extra slot, undo, shuffle) was used;
- a shuffle was requested but declined because no winnable deal existed;
- a purchase was completed, and which product it was.
These events are not tied to your identity. Nocturne has no accounts, and we never collect your name, email, contacts, location, or any device identifier that follows you between apps. Each install is represented by a random ID that exists only to group that install's own events; it resets if you delete and reinstall the app. We do not build a personal profile, and we do not record your screen.
Analytics is processed on our behalf by PostHog (posthog.com), hosted in the United States. PostHog is our processor only; the data is not shared with anyone else, not sold, and not combined with data from other apps or data brokers.
Turning it off. Settings › "Share anonymous usage." Switch it off and Nocturne stops sending anything at all.
Crash and performance reports
Nocturne uses Apple's MetricKit to learn about crashes and hangs. These diagnostic reports are aggregated by Apple's system on your device; the report files themselves never leave your device. At most, Nocturne counts that a crash happened, anonymously, so we know to fix it.
Purchases
Optional extras and the one-time Luminary tier are sold through Apple's App Store. Apple processes the payment; Nocturne never sees your payment details. What Nocturne stores on your device is only what you own.
Advertising attribution
If you install Nocturne after tapping an Apple ad (Apple Ads), Apple can tell us which ad campaign brought you, using Apple's own AdServices system. This is campaign-level information (which campaign, ad group, or keyword); it is not the Advertising Identifier (IDFA), it does not identify you, and it does not track you across other apps. We use it only to learn which ads are worth running. It is covered by the same analytics opt-out above.
What we never do
- No ads in the app, and no ad SDKs.
- No accounts, no sign-in, no email collection.
- No IDFA, no cross-app tracking, no "Ask App Not to Track" prompt, because there is nothing to ask about.
- No selling of data, to anyone, ever.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes, the date above changes with it, and material changes will be called out in the app's release notes. Questions? Reach us through the contact form.
